Skye: Believe in Better
The Scotsman newspaper reported online in February 2019 that 1 in 8 properties on the Isle of Skye were being offered for let for holiday accommodation. A consequence of this is squeezing the resident population out: numerically or by lack of availability of family sized homes.
In a recent case, Pearson Planning, Chartered Surveyors represented a local family wishing to demolish a garage and construct a small annex beside their cottage, so as to provide extra living space. Extension was impossible because of topography and design constraints.
Instead of being accommodating, the local planning authority refused permission on issues of overlooking, car parking and road safety. Pearson Planning, Chartered Surveyors appealed. Scottish Ministers dismissed the appeal on grounds of overlooking from a single window. The Appointed Person ( a fromer employee of Western Isles Council) could have imposed a condition requiring repositioning of the window.
On reapplying, planning permission was subsequently granted.
